Closing workshop of sub-goal 7.2 — Centrum Voda Project
Research project SS02030027 Water systems and water management in the Czech Republic under climate change
Introduction · to · the · topic
Freshwater ecosystems are among the most threatened in the world, and the main driver of their degradation is fragmentation. The river network of the Czech Republic is one of the most fragmented in Europe. Transverse barriers — weirs, dams, sluices — interrupt the natural migration corridors of fish and disrupt ecological processes along the entire length of watercourses and into the adjacent floodplains.
This workshop closes sub-goal 7.2 of the Centrum Voda — Water as an Environment for Life project and delivers results where they can make a real difference: into the hands of river basin managers, nature conservation authorities, and the expert and general public.
It is not only a presentation — it is an active discussion of concrete solutions and their implementation in practice.
Main · topics
The workshop summarises the results of sub-goal 7.2 — River Network Fragmentation of the Centrum Voda project. The aim of 7.2 is to understand the anthropogenic pressure of fragmentation on aquatic ecosystems and to offer tools to address it.
The project's main outputs focus on:
By taking part in the workshop, you will have the opportunity to comment on the proposed approaches and contribute to the effective restoration of river connectivity. Interim results can be viewed on the Centrum Voda website.
Longitudinal, lateral and downstream fragmentation — current state, impacts on fish communities, and methodological approaches.
The Concept for Restoring Passability of the Czech river network as a tool for restoring river connectivity — spatial planning at the national level, risks and gaps.
Working on case studies. Discussion and selection of the best solutions.
